PR agency continues to support local communities in Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Seattle areas.

LOS GATOS, Calif., January 2, 2009 — Sterling Communications Inc., an independent, full-service public relations agency, ended 2008 by donating more than 65 volunteer hours across its Los Gatos, San Francisco and Seattle offices in November and December to several different local nonprofit organizations. These projects—which included working with animal shelters, teaming up with a food bank and donating supplies to a health program in San Francisco—were Sterling’s latest efforts in an ongoing tradition of giving back to the communities in which its employees live and work.

“This fall, Sterling employees really went above and beyond in terms of volunteering,” said Marianne O’Connor, president and CEO of Sterling Communications. “In this difficult economic time when many nonprofit organizations are struggling, we’re happy to have been able to donate more volunteer hours than ever before. Looking back on the past two years, I’m extremely proud of the volunteer work Sterling employees have accomplished, and I feel very fortunate to work with people who, like me, see the value in giving to those in need.”

Sterling employees in Los Gatos donated their time at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley (HSSV), an animal shelter that aims to eliminate the unnecessary euthanasia of approximately 50,000 pets annually in the Bay Area. After washing windows at the shelter, Sterlingers spent time playing with some of HSSV’s resident dogs—Maggie and Rosey.

“Most of us here at Sterling are animal lovers, so we were excited about the opportunity to spend time at the Humane Society in any capacity they needed us,” said Nicole Vanderhoof, an account associate. “Not only were the dogs happy to see us, but the shelter’s employees were also very grateful for our help.”

Seattle Sterlingers spent an afternoon at Greyhound Pets, Inc., an organization that works to find homes for former racing greyhounds. Employees spent the afternoon playing outside with each of the shelter’s greyhounds while staff cleaned their cages and replaced bedding. Greyhound Pets, located in Woodinville, Wash., has placed more than 4,900 greyhounds in homes across the Pacific Northwest and Canada.

Sterlingers in Los Gatos also hosted a food drive for the second time in three years to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Along with San Francisco employees, as well as other local companies and friends of Sterling, the company donated 450 pounds of non-perishable food items, as well as monetary donations, to benefit local low-income families. In addition, also for the second time, Los Gatos-based Sterlingers volunteered to distribute food to families in need at one of Second Harvest’s “Family Harvest” distribution centers. The food bank provides groceries to an average of 176,000 individuals each month and is the seventh largest food bank in the country.

“Since we’ve worked with Second Harvest’s food bank program before, we knew what a rewarding experience it would be,” said senior account executive Shira Frantzich. “However, more families came to collect food from the Family Harvest program this year, so we were able to help more people. It’s always a nice feeling to help those in need, but actually seeing the people who are benefiting from our efforts is instant gratification.”

Finally, for the third year in a row, Sterling employees from all three offices collected toiletries and supplies and assembled 100 hygiene kits for donation to San Francisco’s Glide Health Services. The kits benefited Glide’s HIV/AIDS Services program, which aims to build a healthier community through street-based outreach and harm reduction education.

Sterling Communications has a history of giving back to its local communities through its Giving Everyone A Reason (GEAR) to Help corporate philanthropy program. In the past, employees have donated more than 30 volunteer hours at local adult care facilities and collected almost $1,600 for victims of the Myanmar (Burma) cyclone and China’s earthquake, as well as ongoing famine in Africa. Other activities have included “green” volunteer projects such as planting trees with Friends of the Urban Forest, as well as sponsored clothing drives. Pictures from the company’s various volunteer projects are available via Sterling’s photo gallery.
